Sam Brown – leader Sonelius Smith – piano Reggie Workman – bass Charles Majid Greenlee – trombone Olu Dara – trumpet

This film was produced by Karma Stanley and Juma Sultan for the New York Musicians Organization.

Sonelius Smith played and recorded with Rahsaan Roland Kirk and David Murray.

Reggie Workman performed for over forty years with a long list of notable players, including John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, Pharoah Sanders, Sam Rivers, Archie Shepp, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Yusef Lateef, and Andrew Hill.

Charles Majid Greenlee’s career was truly expansive. From Dizzy Gillespie, Monk and Mingus to John Coltrane, Sam Rivers, and Archie Shepp, Greenlee performed for decades with a wide range of artists. He died in 1993 at the age of 79.

While Olu Dara developed as a noted trumpeter in the 1970’s, performing with David Murray, Hammiet Bluiett, and James Blood Ulmer, among others, it wasn’t until the turn of the century that he succeeded as a lead artist. In 2001 he released the critically praised album Neighborhoods.

Note: this concert appears to be on the same day as the Pharoah Sanders concert in this video archive.
