Jazz Composers Orchestra of America, 1974, Public Theater, NYC - 19:03

30 piece orchestra, including Hamiet Bluiett and Arthur Doyle

This is a rehearsal of the JCOA conducted by Dave Burrell. The piece was segmented into movements. Dave “connected all the old roots,” says Juma, “like the dixieland sound to the contemporary. It was quite a composition, almost like an American anthem.” Juma also recorded the actual concert and that resides on another tape in his collection.

Dave Burrell’s career spans four decades, performing with Pharoah Sanders, Grachan Moncur, Archie Shepp, Alan Silva, Sunny Murray, David Murray, Khan Jamal, and many others. In 2006 Burrell released the album Momentum.

Although the full line-up of this JCOA performance is not known at this time, Juma believes that both Hamiet Bluiett and Arthur Doyle were among the players.
