May 28,
2014 Evgeny Katz, the Milton Kerker
Chaired Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular
Science in Clarkson University’s School of Arts & Sciences, has
been awarded Clarkson's Lifetime Research Achievement Award.
The Lifetime Research Achievement Award is granted annually to recognize research by a tenured faculty member who is recognized internationally for a body of work that exemplifies the highest level of research accomplishment and has made a significant impact on their chosen field of study. An esteemed scientist, Katz has received numerous awards, including two Kaye Awards for Scientific Innovations (1995 and 2004); and the Humboldt Scholarship, which gave him an opportunity to work at the Technical University of Munich. His research interests are biocomputing; biosensors; biofunctionalized nanomaterials for bioelectronic and biomedical applications; bionanoengineering; bioelectronics & optobioelectronics; and bionanotechnology for bioelectronic applications. Ranked as one of the world’s top 100 chemists by Thomson Reuters, Katz has been inducted into Clarkson’s Million Dollar Club for attracting more than $1 million of external funding for his research activities in the last five years. He has received awards from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Defense, and private industry. Katz and his research team of Ph.D. candidates, post-doctoral researchers and undergraduate students work in his Laboratory of Bioelectronics and Biotechnology at Clarkson, where they are exploring chemical building blocks for technologies that combine biology and nanotechnology. He explains, "We can program the chemical system in the same way engineers can program computers." A gifted scholar, Katz is an expert in colloid science, nanomaterials and bioelectronics. He holds more than 20 international patents and has written or co-written 380 articles for scholarly journals, book chapters and conferences. His H-index (reflecting the citation rate) reached the value of 74, meaning that his 74 papers (from total number of papers 380) have been cited at least 74 and more times. The total citations of his work are above 18,000. He has taught and conducted research at the world’s top universities in Russia, Spain, Germany and Jerusalem. Amid all the international acclaim, Katz counts his blessings in the number of his students who have gone on to their own success. He says, "One of my driving forces is not only doing science, but 'making' people. If I know my students are successful in doing research, in publishing papers, in getting good jobs, this is what makes me the most happy.” Evgeny Katz joined Clarkson University in 2006, coming from The Institute of Chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the A.N. Frumkin Institute of Electrochemistry, Moscow. He received his bachelor of science and master of science degrees in chemical engineering from D.I. Mendeleyev Chemical Engineering University, Moscow, graduating Summa Cum Laude. are inquisitive, energetic and creative. They enjoy intellectual
stimulation, hands-on activities, going places, and good fellowship.
SOAR members love learning just for the sake of learning, and they love
sharing what they know.
SOAR employs just one part-time staff person. Everyone else - board and committee members, course presenters, classroom ambassadors, office helpers, and many others - is a volunteer. Video - the beginning of the lecture. |

July,
2011 Our undergraduate
student Kevin MacVittie
received an award
for the research trip to Europe. This trip was supported jointly by
Clarkson University and University of Ljubljana, top University in
Slovenia.
His description of the trip is given below: "During the summer of 2011, Clarkson
University granted me the
opportunity to spend eight weeks abroad, through an exchange program
being set up by Dean Prof. Turner. Six of these weeks were spent
performing
research in a biochemistry lab at the Jozef Stefan Institute at the
University of Ljubljana in Slovenia. Here I performed protein synthesis
research to isolate a specific region of an uncharacterized surface
protein believed to be tied to tumor growth. During the six weeks I was
able to absorb much of the culture from the capital city Ljubljana, as
well as the surrounding towns and villages. Much of my free time was
spent climbing in the Julian Alps with a few of my comrades from the
lab. After the six weeks I was able to travel through Italy and France
for two weeks. I spent a day in Venice, six in Rome, and six in Paris.
This was a fantastic opportunity for me to immerse myself in the
cultures of the many different countries there, as well as see the many
monuments and works of art that many only get to see in photographs."
This option is still open next year for other students in Clarkson. |
