Research Abstract:
This paper explores the dangers faced by oil platforms subjected to the harsh environmental conditions of the Bohai Sea. Specifically, it focuses on dynamic analysis of jacket structures subjected to ice-induced vibrations. It introduces several important ice force functions for structures equipped with ice-breaking cones and then demonstrates the use of those equations in a sample analysis of a small riser platform attached to platform JZ9-3. Spectral analyses are performed on a finite element model for 25 different ice thickness-velocity combinations in order to calculate the acceleration and stress responses of the structure. The probabilities of the different ice conditions are determined using probability density functions based on data collected from long-term monitoring of existing platforms. Maximum acceleration results are compared to limits dictated by two different failure modes: pipeline failure and human factors. By applying the Miner-Palmgren method of damage summation to the probabilistic stress results, the fatigue life of the platform is estimated to be approximately 150 years.
