Accommodations

Xin Xin Bing Guan

Due to a lack of vacancies in the foreign students' dormitories at DUT, the Dalian boys got to stay in the Xin Xin Bing Guan, or “New New Hotel,” located just across from the school's north gate. While it may not be a 5-star resort by western standards, it does boast such amenities as air-conditioning, a maid service, and hot water—but only from 8 to 11 pm. They have a common kitchen with gas stoves and refrigerators as well as two washer/spin-drier combos that work most of the time. It is located near a small grocery store, several restaurants, at least a dozen hair salons, and some miscellaneous shops. Despite the four flights of stairs we forced to climb each evening, the Xin Xin was the preferred (and significantly less moldy) housing arrangement.

Foreign Students' Apartment

All of the Dalian girls lived in an apartment inside DUT's north gate.  It was just a ten minute walk to the boys' hotel at the north gate and about five minutes from work. The apartment had two bedrooms, one bathroom, a living area, and a kitchen complete with a refrigerator, microwave, and stovetop.  Each bedroom had one double bed that was shared by two students. Sheets and blankets were provided, but you'll need to bring or buy a towel. There wasn't air conditioning, but there was one fan that helped a lot.  We had a washing machine in the bathroom and then hung clothes to dry in the living area.  As the summer went on, mold in the apartment definitely increased.  Bring medicine if you're allergic to it!  Overall, however, the apartment was a nice and convenient place to live.
