Museums
Shell Museum
The shell museum is something of a let down. There is a giant castle on top of a hill that you can see from Xinghai Plaza, so naturally we went and climbed up the bajillion stairs to the top. Once we got there, lo and behold, it's a museum. It costs something like Y 30, but all that's inside is a bunch of shells. I mean, it's a shell museum so what do you expect, but still. The museum only takes up a small portion of the castle, and they don't let you go anywhere else.
Dalian Modern Museum
The modern museum showcases all the aspects of Dalian as a city. There are some interesting exhibits, and there's a fun science exhibit that's supposed to be for children. Most of the captions and things are in Chinese though, so you can't read a lot of it. It's pretty close to the Natural History museum, so stop by if you have some time and Y 30.
Museum of Natural History
Compared to natural history museums in large cities in the states, this museum is a little small, but still has a good selection of exhibits. They have some nice dinosaur fossils, and a particularly impressive bed of dinosaur eggs. There is also an exhibit about whales with life-size models and several whale skeletons. Overall, this museum is quite nice, and at Y 30 you should definitely visit it before you leave.
