Knowing even a little Chinese will help you get around much more easily in China. Although all of the students learn English, getting around outside of campus can be difficult, so we decided to list some of the phrases we think will be most useful.
The first column lists the English meanings, and the second column gives the pronunciations using Pinyin, the official Romanization scheme for Mandarin Chinese. The numbers after each word indicate the tone of the word. Finally the characters are listed.
This list is not intended to be comprehensive, so you should study additional Chinese before coming. Most useful would probably be learning the numbers, followed by common greetings, foods, colors, and other common small talk phrases.
